From unknown newspaper, April 1913: ?John J. B. Lerch, one of the little band of eleven survivors of Eighth Battalion, Turner Regiment, District National Guard, which acted as the bodyguard of President Lincoln during the early years of the war, will celebrate his fiftieth anniversary of service with the Washington postoffice today... When war broke out between the North and the South he took a leading part in the organization of the Eighth Battalion of the Turner Regiment, D. C. N. G. His battalion was chosen as the personal guard of the great President, and formed his escort, whenever he went to the Capitol. For this battalion is claimed the honor of losing the first man killed on the Northern side. The old guard, Mr. Lerch says, have stuck together, true comrades through the long-intervening years. Every April 11, the day when they were mustered in, they have come together of a banquet board, have grown fewer, until now but eleven of them remain. On April 13, 1863, just a half-century ago, Mr. Lerch was appointed as one of the clerks in the postoffice of this city at the request of President Lincoln.? Lindenkohl, Frederick. H, 41st New York Infantry. Mustered in as a private; mustered out as a corporal. Descendant David B. Francis tells us: ?On 6 June 1861 in Yorkville, NY, Ernst Weber enlisted in the 41st New York Infantry, and was enrolled in Federal service on 26 June for a 3 year term. The 41st, also called DeKalb?s regiment, was raised in New York City as a "three-year-regiment" with companies from Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 41st was all-German and was named for Baron Johann DeKalb, a Revolutionary War hero who came from Bavaria and served with Lafayette. The 41st was also occasionally called the 2nd J?ger Regiment, a German term for light infantry which means ?hunter.? The regiment was equipped by the Union Defense Committee of New York using New York and War Department funds. The 41st also had a number of benefactors in the German-American community, especially Rudolph A. Witthaus, a wealthy cloth importer and banker. As a result, the 41st had impressive banners and colorful uniforms, which were quickly found to be impractical. The 41st was commanded by Col. Leopold von Gilsa, who was a former Prussian major. Altogether, 23 of the regiment?s 33 field officers were veterans of European military service. (Martin, Chapter 1). The 41st was sent to Washington on 8 July, 1861 where it was assigned to Gen. Runyon?s reserve division of Gen. McDowell?s Army of Northeastern Virginia. According to Marin?s regimental history (p. 27- 29): "McDowell had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 41st and other new regiments so he would be at top strength for his planned advance on the Confederate forces camped about 22 miles southeast of Washington near Manassas Junction." McDowell committed his forces to the Battle of Bull Run on 21 July, but held Runyon?s division in reserve because the troops were so green. After the Union rout began, the reserves were ordered to take a position on the Centreville, Virginia, ridge to cover the Union retreat. The 41st reached this position with difficulty because of the retreating troops, but did not engage the enemy. They then joined the retreat to Washington, crossing the Long Bridge in a drenching rain, fearful of "a Confederate attack that fortunately never came." The 41st suffered no casualties at Bull Run. According to his service record and discharge papers, Ernst was promoted to corporal the day after the battle (22 July 1861). After Bull Run, the regiment was engaged in building additional fortifications in the Arlington area and named their principal contribution Fort DeKalb. "During October, the 41st remained encamped at Fort DeKalb...Autumn life...quickly settled into a routine. Only occasionally was contact made with the Confederates. Pickets, which were stationed as far as three miles from camp in two day shifts, had to remain especially alert." Perhaps Ernst was not alert enough, as he became one of the 41st?s rare casualties for this period. While he was on picket duty with his company in late November 1861, their positions were raided by Gen. J. E. B. Stuart?s Confederate cavalry. Ernst received a saber wound to his left forearm, a gun shot wound to his left hand, and another gun shot which broke his left leg. He may also have been trampled by the enemy cavalryman?s horse. Here is an eyewitness account, furnished in 1872 by two of his comrades, Christian Bloedner and Ignatz Krauss: "...they were with claimant on picket duty in the latter part of November 1861, near Anandale [sic] Virginia, when the picket was attacked by the rebels? (Stuart?s) cavalry and during said skirmish claimant was severely wounded, and in that condition was taken to the Division Hospital, a house in Anandale, Virginia, in charge of Surgeon Brilantowski...about midnight Nov. 1861 during an attack by the rebel cavalry in our pickets near Cooks farm, Virginia. The claimant received a sabre cut in the left arm, and a pistol shot in the same arm. After he was felled to the ground the enemy horse trampled upon him crushing his left leg badly. We were fully cognizant of these fact, and saw him carried into one for the farm houses at Anandale which was used as a hospital at the time for medical treatment." Other comrades, including three officers and the company first sergeant also verified this account. Another comrade, Jacob Wiener, offered the following description: "I belonged to "A" Co. but was detached as wagon master of the regiment at the time and sent the ambulances for the wounded of the regiment. When the ambulances returned, I saw Weber was wounded. I went to him and saw the wounds as I have described...[I know] by reason of my acquaintance with the claimant before he was wounded having been with him a good deal because we were both German and could not talk much English and in that way and by that reason we were quite good friends." (According to Martin?s history of the regiment, Jacob Wiener was not an original member of Co. "A"; there was a Gustav Wiener in Co. "B"). Ernst was mustered out of the regiment at Hunter?s Chapel, Virginia, with a disability discharge on 8 March 1862, just as the regiment began preparing for McClellan?s spring offensives. Hunter?s Chapel was the division HQ, and is on the Columbia Turnpike, about halfway between Arlington House and Bailey?s Crossroads, within an easy walk of the city of Washington. Because of his disability, Ernst?s discharge included a description of his injuries written in Latin by regimental surgeon Samuel Brilliantkowski. It was signed by Col. Leopold von Gilsa, the regimental commander, and his service record was signed by Gen. Louis Blenker, the division commander, and approved by rubber stamp at Gen. George McClelland?s Army of the Potomac headquarters. Ernst?s war wounds seriously impaired his left arm. Here is an examining surgeon?s report from an 1884 pension claim: "He presents a scar nearly four inches long on the thick part of his left arm, ulnar side, which he says was a sabre cut which must have penetrated to the bone. Has now contraction of little and ring fingers of the wounded arm. Can fully flex the fingers but can not extend them more than 3/4 inch from the palm." Another description from 1889: "As a result the thumb is drawn against index and almost the only use the hand is that given by index and middle fingers, though he can oppose thumb to index and middle fingers to slight degree." His leg injury was also painful and debilitating. An 1884 description: "We find deformity of the tibia about 3 inches above the ankle...The inner side of the leg is red and angry and has three ulcers now open. The whole ankle is enlarged...He is a large, heavy man. As he gets older the leg will no doubt get worse." And from 1889: "There has been a fracture of left tibia at lower third with overlapping of upper fragments 1/2 inch. Running upwards and inward from the fracture is a large scar 3 in. x 1.2 in. down to bone and tender. Has varix of the leg from foot to knee. Ernst first applied for a disability pension in 1872. His application was approved and a pension was granted retroactive to his discharge in 1862. He was initially paid $8 per month. (His Army pay had been $12 per month in 1862.) He applied for a number of increases over the years, which left a rich record in the National Archives. Some of the applications were granted. His monthly payment increased to $10 March 3, 1873; to $14 July 21, 1880; to $16 January 2, 1889; and to $24 May 15, 1889. The details of the history of the 41st NY Infantry are from: David G.
